June 9, 2016 The House that Love Built

Whether purchasing a first home, undergoing extensive renovations to accommodate for an expanding family, or finally finding the perfect home to start the next chapter of their lives, it feels like many families around us this year are in a state of transition.

Thinking back on our own decision to move from our loft in New Westminster and to leave our studio/meeting space in Vancouver, it too was with feelings of wanderlust and excitement. With two very young babes in tow, we ventured off to Victoria ready for our next adventure. Looking back on our loft, it was a place where we met with many of our wedding and portrait clients (perhaps we even met you there!), it was our gallery space, and where Chris and I as a newly married couple obsessed over the details of everything in our new space. It was where, over much discussion between us, decisions from everything from paint choices to the course of our life trajectories were made.  It was where we made great friendships, launched our business to a full time venture, and spent countless hours with meetings, editing into the wee hours, and spending time with friends and family. And later still, the loft was the first place where one babe was brought home after the hospital, and where another was brought earth side right within those walls. It was where one learned to walk (quite tentatively) on the hardwood floors, and where another watched her first fireworks over the river from our balcony. All these, and many more memories in one small space. It was home.

Leaving behind a home with so many memories can be bittersweet. We can totally relate to the K family, as they prepare themselves to say thank you and goodbye to their home, and wanted to do a portrait session as a way to celebrate all the special moments they had created together in that space. We hope that when you look through these images, you remember what it was like to bring your babies into your room for a snuggle during the night, or to play outside with them in that yard. Here’s a peek into the K family’s Home Session…

April 14, 2012 Carol + Torey = Baby P

October 18th 2008 was a very special day.  It was the day that Carol and Torey were married in front of their family and friends and our cameras.  After we photographed their wedding, and delivered their album, we didn’t see them for a while until we received an email from Carol saying “we’re having a baby!”.  We were thrilled for them, excited to see them again, but also felt very honored to called upon to capture such a special time in their lives once again.  Baby P arrived two weeks early – she just couldn’t wait to get in front of our cameras ; )  Here are some of our favorites of a then 6 day old Baby P.

October 21, 2011 Kristen + Tyler = Rock the Frock Session!

After all the anticipation, excitement, and investment that goes into a Wedding gown, it is a shame that often times it ends up hidden in the highest shelf of your closet. Packaged beautifully and meticulously preserved perhaps, but still only having had one day to shine.

Some brides have many different directions that they would have liked to go in with their Wedding attire, but due to logistics, it just wasn’t possible to include all those details within their Day. Dreaming of different shoes and accessories, or perhaps a more casual interpretation than what suited other elements of their Day,  a location that couldn’t be reached due to timing, weather, or season, can leave a bride feeling just a teensy bit disappointed. Others just want to spend some more time in their fabulous gown with their new hubby! All of these are great reasons to “Rock the Frock”!

As photographers, we have seen the movement of the “Trash the Dress” over the years, and although it can work for a couple that is ready to take it that far, we really love photographing gorgeous gowns and have a hard time imagining “trashing” them. A few years ago we started our “Rock the Frock” Sessions as a way to give a gown a brilliant send-off before it goes to its next destination (packaged carefully in a box, sold or donated to an excited bride-to-be, or saved for a future generation to enjoy). Kristin and Tyler’s was the first Rock the Frock of the 2011 Wedding Season, and we had such a great time with this fun couple!

The only element that stayed true to their Wedding Day was Kristen’s gown. The rest of their attire –  from Kristen’s gorgeous hair piece, fun shoes, and cosy sweater, to Tyler’s attire, hat and red messenger bag, were all thoughtfully put together by Kristin and Tyler for their Session. Bring in a new location, and a sunset session on the brink of Fall, and it was a fantastic way to enjoy one last evening with Kristen’s perfect dress. I hope it had as much fun as we did! icon wink Kristen + Tyler = Rock the Frock Session!
